The first of Delta Goodrem’s songs that I heard was “In This Life.” I didn’t know anything about her at the time but I knew I liked the song. So I bought the album, and decided she was my favorite singer! Since then, I have heard a lot more of her music and learned a lot more about her. I thought today I would share some of my thoughts!
First of all, I think she is so talented! She started as an actress on Neigbours in 2002, playing a student and aspiring singer named Nina. The role allowed her to showcase both her acting and musical skills. It even helped launch her first successful single, “Born to Try.” The song was a big success in both Australia and the UK. She also received a Logie award for her portrayal of Nina. Pretty great for someone who was only 18 at the time, right?
The following year, her debut album, Innocent Eyes, was released. And this is where she gets a lot of respect from me. At this point, you would have thought Delta had everything going for her: after paying her dues for years, she finally had a successful album and some well-received singles that were spending lots of time at the top of the charts.
Unfortunately, just as her career was taking off, Delta was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Everything in her life came to a screeching halt while she underwent treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. This poor beautiful girl – at an age where your life is really just beginning, and in her case, her star was finally on the rise – was being pumped full of toxic chemicals, losing her hair, and bravely fighting against the cancer that was trying to destroy her.
The end of 2003 brought some good news: Delta was in remission. Some people might have quit after the cancer diagnosis, or taken some much deserved time off to reevaluate where they wanted to go in life, but not Delta! She started working again, becoming a spokesperson for Pepsi. She even recorded a new album, Mistaken Identity. Songs from the album were certified gold and platinum! Cancer may have slowed her down but didn’t rob her of her talent or prevent her success!
I think that is pretty amazing, don’t you? On my bad days, when I am having a really hard time or I don’t have the motivation to do anything, I think of her with cancer and writing songs. It really puts things in perspective for me and I don’t even know her!
2004 brought even more success for this talented star, and has showed no signs of slowing down since. Sold out tours, top singles, hits in countries around the world, a judge’s chair on The Voice and The Voice Kids, and even a wax likeness at MadameTussauds. She even does loads of charity work!
Yup, in terms of role models, I could have done a lot worse!
